why chickens?
why i draw chickens and why my github has a spinning disco chicken
i started drawing chickens in 2015. we had chickens at my parents’ house and one of them was white and had a really deep coloured red comb. so i started drawing it over and over, and put it in different kinds of situations. i eventually started painting the chicken as well. it’s basically something that completely got out of control. as to why i have a spinning disco chicken on my github page? it’s funny and it reminded me of the white chicken at my parents.
sometimes i drop my chicken into other artists’ paintings. like keith haring or roy lichtenstein. or i try to draw it in another style, but try to keep it recognisable.
i like the fact that it’s so simple to draw and works in so many contexts. i’ve not drawn a lot of chickens lately, but when i do, it’s usually because my mind is pretty full and i need to relax. it’s basically my go-to mindfulness doodle.
lots of people have already asked me multiple times to make prints or t-shirts of my chicken, but i’m reluctant to do so. i have a very high standard when it comes to quality and i do not think i can guarantee that standard when i start distributing it at scale. but never say never.
